Welcome to Portuguese for English Speakers!
This website is designed for English speakers who want to learn Brazilian Portuguese.
I have been tutoring Portuguese as a second language for a few years, and decided to compile part of the lessons I designed on a website, so they are accessible for all language learners. Here you will find material to learn some useful expressions, vocabulary, and how to put sentences together in order to communicate with Portuguese speakers.
The way in which you use the material is a major factor on your language acquisition process; therefore, qualified professional instruction will only enhance your learning. If you don't have the opportunity to work with a proficient Portuguese teacher, I advise you to always look for Portuguese websites or videos in order to get familiar with the sounds of the language, and understand how each feature of the language you learn here is used in context.
To achieve a high level of proficiency in a language, it requires several years of study and practice, so you need to be committed to your goal. Don't let the difficulties lessen your motivation; even native speakers are still working on their language skills, so practice what you have learned so far, and focus on the areas you need improvement.
Remember, authentic practice and exposure are essential to learn a language. Try to add authenticity to the lessons offered on the website: use them to talk to Portuguese speakers; leave comments for them in blogs, Youtube, Facebook; communicate your needs; talk about yourself; visit Brazilian web pages. That is the kind of practice you need to become a competent Portuguese speaker!
